Brian Callahan, son of former Oakland Raiders head coach Bill Callahan, is another young assistant that the Cincinnati Bengals decided to add to unofficial head coach Zac Taylor’s staff.
Callahan first started his career with the Denver Broncos where he spent his first six seasons. He was an offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach the season the Broncos won Super Bowl 50.
In addition to the Broncos, Callahan has coaching stops with the Detroit Lions as the quarterbacks coach for two years before joining Jon Gruden’s staff in Oakland under the same position.
This will be Callahan’s first stint as a play caller as an offensive coordinator.
Currently Callahan is 34. A whole year younger than Taylor who is 35.
Age may be a concern, but the experience is there for Callahan
It is clear that the Benglas are following the trend of hiring young coaches that has been popular around the league. Sean McVay’s success with the Los Angeles Rams has teams like the Arizona Cardinals and the Bengals targeting young coaches with offensive minds similar to McVay.
The Bengals are bringing in Callahan as a potential innovative offensive mind to improve the offensive attack. Last season the Bengals ranked No. 26 in total offense for the season, only gaining 310.8 yards per game.
He will replace Bill Lazor, who was fired after this season.
The NFL is too much of a trend league. I don’t think Bill Callahan was that amazing as a coach, which is no indication if his son will be.
